BIMHUIS & MUZIEKGEBOUW PRESENT:
Enchancting, stirring and absolutely virtuosic: that is the string playing of the three renowned musicians from Istanbul who together form the Taksim Trio. They excel in so-called ‘taksims’, improvisations that draw from Ottoman classical music, Anatolian folk, blues, raga and flamenco. Graceful, familiar-sounding melodies can gradually flare up into exuberant and breathtaking ventures.
The driving force behind the bunch is Ismail Tunçbilek on the electric bağlama, also called a Turkish saz. He has previously played with the great flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía. Aytaç Doğan excels on the kanun, the horizontal stringed instrument played with the fingers. And Hüsnü Şenlendirici is an ambassador of the clarinet in Turkish music and a well-known name in traditional styles as well as pop and jazz.
