Berlin/Lisbon: WOMEX – The Worldwide Music Expo unveils the first batch of Jury-selected showcase artists performing at WOMEX 22 in Lisbon from 19 – 23 October 2022. The 23 showcase artists confirmed today represent 24 countries that will be bringing diverse musical influences from across the globe to the 28th edition of the event.
Today’s line-up announcement brings you Venezuelan joropo, Argentinian chacarera, and Peruvian waltz performed by Aguamadera (Argentina/France); folklore from the Maghreb mixed with Gnawa-rock and electro-pop from Djazia Satour (Algeria/France); Sara Correia (Portugal): the rising star who grew up in a family of fadistas inhabiting the middle ground between traditional, dark fado and its modern, lighter incarnation; The Dizzy Brains (Madagascar) – four musicians with a garage-rock sound spreading their music beyond their native Madagascar to vent their anger against social injustices, and Lagos-based Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy (Nigeria), Afrobeat-rooted, hard bop-influenced trumpeter, who reaches back to the great Tunde Williams (a founder member of Fela Kuti’s seminal band Africa 70 in the 60s) – to name a few artists! This year’s showcase performances already represent a wide range of genres – and more to come – with our upcoming artist announcements that will feature the diverse and celebratory WOMEX programme-mix of artists: critically acclaimed, recently established, respected, discoveries, famous, deeply rooted, and those with decades of artistry and musical togetherness.
WOMEX Jury and Official Programme Selection:
The official programme is put together from the pool of proposals that are received from around the world during an open call for submissions – open to any artist residing in any country worldwide. Altogether more than 1,600 conferences, showcases, and film proposals were received, evidently indicating the WOMEX community’s enthusiasm and readiness to kick-start the live music economy globally. The official programme is curated together by the annually changing independent and international WOMEX Jury, also known as the ‘7 Samurai‘: five focusing on the Showcase proposals and two on the Conference. Together with the WOMEX showcase team, a dedicated curator puts together the Club Summit showcases, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
Upcoming Announcements:
Conferences, Films and more performing artists will be announced in the coming weeks, including the artists for the ‘Lusofónica Stage’. This regional stage will celebrate the music and culture of the Lusophone communities who share the Portuguese language. The Opening night’s artists and the recipients of the concluding WOMEX Awards are also to be announced soon.
As ever, the WOMEX teams are working hard to bring you an exciting and diverse range of programming in conference sessions, panel discussions, films, showcase artists and networking opportunities for all delegates participating. In addition, WOMEX is committed to providing artists, cultural actors, and all attending music professionals a platform to engage in peer sharing and learning, enabling national and international networking opportunities for the vast musical landscape.

ARTIST QUOTES
“I am really excited to be part of a long legacy of artists who have showcased at WOMEX, representing authentic South African sounds and stories. You can expect a poetically enlightening and harmonious experience told through the re-imagination of South African folk songs with songs inspired and written to celebrate our diverse languages, culture and musical styles.”
Pilani Bubu (South Africa)
“After two years of hiatus, it’s a chance to perform in front of an audience of professionals from all walks of life. We have been performing abroad for several years now and we are always looking to develop and discover new countries and cultures that are as attached to their roots as we are, and we hope that this WOMEX will help us greatly.”
Startijenn (France)
“The past 2 years have been some of the most challenging times artists have ever faced. During the period of lockdown, Windborne has kept striving to create art that speaks to current struggles and joys while drawing power from traditions and struggles of the past. We are honoured and grateful to be chosen by WOMEX to bring our vocal harmonies to the world stage.”
Windborne (USA)
