World Blend Café program on Friday 24 June
|
|
Together with our friends of World Music Forum NL, inJazz presents a cosy World Blend Café filled with the great crossover spirit of the city of Rotterdam. Or, as it is lovingly named: Roots-erdam. A varied set of talks and showcases without borders!
In sea port Rotterdam, also known as ‘the 10th island of Cape Verde’, with its multinational population, old roots melt into new musical routes. This is expressed in clubs, festivals and the internationally renowned Codarts conservatory, which specialises in flamenco, Latin, morna and Indian music. |
Expect a musical meeting interspersed with speakers & spectacle to highlight Rotterdam’s global roots and contemporary scene. A unique opportunity to mingle with agents and programmers from all over Europe, and listen to short concerts by Ishtar Bakhtali (photo), a vocalist who incorporates Indian classical music elements, jazz, electronics, and Latin influences into her narrative compositions, and by the Flamencos por el Mundo Quartet of guitarists Anoush Saadat and Vicente Santiago.
The professionals’ program of inJazz 2022 takes place in various Rotterdam landmarks, who are worth a visit in themselves. Verhalenhuis Belvédère (‘House for Intangible Heritage’) is located in a building that dates from 1894. It has seen the transformation of Katendrecht (“The Cape”) from a polder village to one of the most striking neighbourhoods of Rotterdam. In the 1930s, music coloured the neighbourhood with brass bands, barrel organs and, above all, jazz. Kid Dynamite, Teddy Cotton, Boy Edgar were performing there regularly. |
During the war, Belvédère was a kind of refuge for jazz musicians.
The monumental Batavierhuis is an independent makerspace and incubator for (young) enterprising artists. In the Batavierhuis, all the smaller Rotterdam music threads, as diverse as the city itself, are fused into one big network. Grounds is another key venue in the Delfshaven neighbourhood of Rotterdam. It is home to the world music department of Codarts (Rotterdam conservatoire), which is unique in the Netherlands. |

BIMHUIS Nieuwe Makers guest at inJazz 2022
|
For Nieuwe Makers, BIMHUIS invites up-and-coming talent to experiment and develop new work. Guitarist Ella Zirina and saxophonist Hristo Goleminov are the ones to listen to – and you can, after the official opening of inJazz on 22 June! Both Ella and Hristo are currently recording their debut albums.
Ella is originally from Latvia. She graduated with the highest honors at |
Conservatorium van Amsterdam, having studied with, among others, Jesse van Ruller and Reinier Baas. The classically trained multi-instrumentalist Hristo Goleminov moved from Portugal to Amsterdam to study jazz. At the Conservatorium van Amsterdam he was taught by, among others, Jasper Blom and Ben van Gelder. His master research explored the baroque sonata as a model for jazz composition. |
